Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiatives at the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa

Date: 2024

Prepared by: Sustainability Office – University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa

Introduction:

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa is deeply committed to addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This commitment is embodied in our renewable energy infrastructure and the university’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices into campus operations. By harnessing solar energy and implementing eco-friendly policies, we actively work to reduce our carbon footprint and foster a sustainable campus environment.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction at the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa in Iraq is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through strategic initiatives aimed at sustainability and responsible resource management. Our efforts to monitor and decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are part of our broader sustainability mission, aligning with global environmental goals.

Carbon Footprint Overview (2024)

Commitment: Reducing environmental impact with a focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water conservation.

Total Annual Emissions: ~724 tonnes CO₂ per year (following the Greenhouse Gas Protocol).

Emissions Breakdown:

Scope 1: 485 tonnes CO₂ (67%) – mainly from on-campus generators.

Scope 2: 113 tonnes CO₂ (16%) – from purchased electricity.

Scope 3: 126 tonnes CO₂ (17%) – from off-campus fuel use and international travel.

Key Insight: Direct fuel use for electricity generation is the largest contributor.

Per Capita Footprint: ~0.08 tonnes CO₂ per person annually (based on a 9,000 campus population).

To minimise our dependence on conventional energy sources, the university has invested in extensive solar energy infrastructure. Solar PV power stations, with a combined capacity of 11000 kW, are distributed across the campus. These stations are strategically positioned to capture maximum sunlight, providing a substantial portion of the campus's energy needs through clean, renewable power. This solar infrastructure is a key component of our GHG reduction strategy, lowering both emissions and energy costs.

1.2 Rooftop Solar Panels:

Solar panels have been installed on the rooftops of major campus buildings, such as the Al-Ola, Al-Isma, and College of Law buildings. These installations ensure that the university's energy needs are met sustainably, further reducing our reliance on non-renewable sources and lowering GHG emissions associated with traditional energy generation.

  1. Sustainable Campus Policies

2.1 Energy-Efficient Building Designs:

The university incorporates energy-efficient architectural designs to optimise resource usage. Features like double-glazed windows, specialised thermal tiles, and open-space building designs reduce the need for artificial heating, cooling, and lighting, minimising energy consumption and GHG emissions.

2.2 Sustainable Resource Management Systems:

The campus utilises smart energy controls that optimise power usage across facilities. By monitoring and adjusting energy use in real-time, these systems ensure efficient energy management, further supporting GHG reduction.

  1. Community and Educational Engagement

3.1 Environmental Awareness and Student Involvement:

The university fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among students and staff through workshops, sustainability courses, and eco-friendly campus initiatives. Engineering and bioengineering programmes, for example, encourage students to incorporate GHG reduction elements in their projects, ensuring that the next generation of graduates is equipped with knowledge and skills for sustainable practices.

3.2 Entrepreneurial Support for Green Businesses:

Through the Warith Entrepreneurship Centre, the university supports green start-ups and sustainable business ventures. This centre provides guidance and resources for students, alumni and the community, encouraging projects that align with environmental goals and contribute to climate action.

3.3 Sustainability Initiatives at the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa

At the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa, we are dedicated to creating a sustainable campus through green building principles and eco-friendly practices that prioritise emission reduction, resource conservation, and sustainable transportation.

3.3.1 Renewable Energy and Resource Conservation

  • Solar Energy: Solar panels power the campus, reducing dependency on external electricity sources.
  • Recycling Initiatives: We recycle water for plant irrigation, compost food waste, and recycle paper to minimise landfill contributions.

3.3.2 Sustainable Transportation Options

  • Ridesharing: Partnering with Taxi Ameen and organising carpooling groups, students and staff reduce emissions and save on transportation costs.
  • Shuttle Services: Free shuttles provide transport to off-campus sites and residences.
  • Reduced Parking: Limited parking encourages the use of shared and eco-friendly transportation.

3.3.3 Flexible Learning Options

  • Online Learning: Platforms like Moodle support remote classes, reducing commute-related emissions and energy usage.
  • Remote Meetings and Exams: IELTS tests, quality assurance reviews, and other sessions are hosted online to limit travel.

3.3.4 Community Engagement and Social Responsibility

  • Community Events: Annual fairs support local causes, such as fundraising for cancer patients.
  • Support for High School Students: Hosting final exams on campus promotes educational support and inspires future applicants.
  1. Future Plans for GHG Reduction

The university aims to expand its solar energy infrastructure by adding more solar panels and exploring additional renewable sources. These efforts are part of a broader plan to achieve greater GHG reductions, ensuring that our campus remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability.

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa is actively reducing its greenhouse gas emissions through comprehensive renewable energy initiatives, sustainable policies, and community engagement. By investing in solar power and energy-efficient buildings and fostering environmental awareness, the university sets a strong example for sustainability in higher education. Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint reflects our dedication to a sustainable future and a healthier environment.
